This course introduces PhD students to the essential concepts in statistical learning. Rather than mathematical proofs, the course focuses on explaining the fundamental ideas behind statistical learning and enables students to use them for a wide range of research purposes. The course builds strength in application of the concepts by
including many examples, classroom exercises, and assignments in R which has become the gold standard statistical environment in many scientific communities. Furthermore, the course also achieves depth by engaging students in a semester-long project which involves a particular topic
