Minor in UX and HCC

User Experience and Human-Centered Computing graphic

The minor will focus on addressing learning objectives relating to Human-Centered Computing (HCC) and User Experience (UX) which are in high demand in industry, including topics relating to design thinking, agile prototyping, and user research.

We have designed this minor to be open to UMBC students who are interested in complementing their degree with skills to conduct interactive design and to conduct user research.

Curriculum: The minor will be earned by students who successfully complete the courses identified below. The minor comprises a total of 18 credits.

Core (required courses – 9 credits)

IS 202 – Systems Analysis Methods (No prerequisites)

IS 303 – Human Factors in Computer System Design (pre-requisite: IS 202/IS 300)

IS 403 – User Interface Design (pre-requisite: IS 303)

Electives (choose three – 9 credits)

IS 304 – Ethical Issues in IS

IS 361 – Technology Management of Aging Services

IS 460 – Health Care Informatics I

IS 461 – Health Care Informatics II

IS 474 – Technology Law

IS 480 – Visualization

IS 404 – Independent Study in Human-Centered Computing and User Experience*

ECEP 405 – Global Engineering**

**Interdisciplinary course where students can work in teams with other disciplines to provide UX-related input into projects.

Notes:

  1. The UX & HCC minor is not available to the BTA major.
  2. The UX & HCC minor constitutes 18 credits including 15 upper-level credits.
  3. Some of the courses in the list of electives have prerequisites that are not part of the minor.
  4. All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
