The IS Department’s Fellowship Opportunity
We are proud to participate in UMBC’s Postdoctoral Fellows Program for Faculty Diversity and to offer one of the most robust compensation packages at the university.
The UMBC postdoctoral fellowship includes full health benefits, $5,500 for conference travel, preparation of scholarly work, and technology needs, office space, library and other privileges at the university. We recognize that funding in engineering and computing disciplines is typically higher than that which the UMBC fellowship provides, so our fellowship also includes:
$80k stipend (UMBC: $50k, COEIT: $10k, IS: $20k) IS Dept travel supplement: $5000 (in addition to the $5,500 offered by university).
Working With Us
The Department of Information Systems offers a supportive environment with a focus on mentoring. We have a strong, collaborative community, and we provide mentoring teams and connections across institutions and communities in the Baltimore region.
We are a research-intensive department with thriving graduate and undergraduate programs. Our faculty are engaged in cutting-edge multidisciplinary research, including the following areas:
- AI and Machine Learning
- Data Science
- Health Informatics
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Software Engineering
Additionally, UMBC is a national model for diversity and inclusive excellence in STEM through its Meyerhoff Scholars program, Center for Women in Technology Scholars program, and PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP and LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate programs to widen access for groups which have been traditionally underrepresented in careers in STEM.
We welcome applications for study in any field represented within Information Systems, particularly interdisciplinary and emerging fields.

About the UMBC Fellowship Program
UMBC is dedicated to ensuring a diverse, scholarly environment and encouraging outstanding individuals to enter the academic profession. The purpose of the University’s Program is to support promising scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy and prepares those scholars for possible tenure track appointments at UMBC. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in the professoriate.
During the two-year fellowship, fellows are provided teaching and research mentors and specialized professional development opportunities. In addition to pursuing their research agenda, fellows teach one course a year in the host department.
Successful candidates for the Program are selected on the basis of scholarly promise and potential to add to the diversity of the UMBC community. Applicants must have completed their doctoral degree when the term of appointment commences and must be no more than three years beyond receiving the Ph.D. Individuals awarded a Ph.D. from UMBC or currently holding a postdoctoral or faculty position (including adjunct positions) at UMBC are not eligible.
Making A Difference
UMBC is dedicated to cultural and ethnic diversity, social responsibility and lifelong learning. Our UMBC community redefines excellence in higher education through an inclusive culture that connects innovative teaching and learning, research across disciplines, and civic engagement. We will advance knowledge, economic prosperity, and social justice by welcoming and inspiring inquisitive minds from all backgrounds. We have much more to do, but we are committed to working together to make our disciplines and our university a place of inclusive excellence for everyone.
Eligibility
Applicants who will have completed the doctoral or masters of fine arts degree no later than July 1, 2021 and no earlier than July 1, 2018 are eligible to apply.
